Academics
The curriculum at HCA recognizes the diversity of learning styles, educational levels, and personal interests of our students. Skills groups, hands-on activities, performing arts, and recreational opportunities give children in the elementary school an environment which stimulates learning.
Kindergarten
To encourage a child's natural development, the kindergarten program is a "readiness curriculum". Through extensive use of learning centers and multi-sensory instruction, the curriculum emphasizes listening skills and social skills. Curriculum materials include Abeka reading and social studies, ACSI daily Bible lessons, CSI hands-on science activities and Saxon math readiness.
A full-day program (8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.), with parent-provided snacks, rest time and hot lunch, is available to students who are age five by September lst. Discover more about our Kindergarten program.
Grades 1-6
Grades one through six use a wide range of curriculum, including an integrated language arts program with a strong emphasis on phonics, literature and language skills. Materials include ABeka, BJU Press, CSI, ACSI, Saxon Math, and HCA curriculum. A complete scope and sequence is available for all grades upon request.
Curriculum is enriched for the high achiever, and specialists assist in specialty subjects. All students take conversational Spanish, art, physical education, music, computers (grades 3 and up), and library classes.
Students in the elementary school are taught in self-contained classrooms in grades one through four with some skill groups in grades five and six. Parental volunteerism is strongly encouraged in the elementary school, in the classrooms and in other areas of the Academy program, including lunchroom and library.
Grades 7-12
Beginning in the 7th grade, students move between classes to various department disciplines. Although the curriculum on the secondary level is governed principally by the requirements of college preparation, students are also encouraged to take courses in speech, computer and other sciences, creative arts, keyboarding, yearbook, and drama.
Nearly all of Harvest's students plan to attend college. In order to prepare our students, extra course work is required in English, math, science, social studies, computer studies, and foreign language.
Honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered in Biology, U.S. History, English Composition, and Calculus. Harvest will offer students the opportunity to "CLEP" out of certain college level courses. Course work offerings prepare students to meet the entrance requirements of the University of Texas and many
private universities. The Guidance Department oversees the testing program in all grades and assists students in preparing college and scholarship applications.
